Matías Inzunza is selling a thirteen-course baroque lute by Hans Jordan, built in Markneukirchen, Germany, in 1969.
Markneukirchen, in the Vogtland region of Saxony, has been a centre of German instrument making since the seventeenth century, and it was there that Hans Jordan built this lute in 1969, during the post-war revival of the baroque lute.
The instrument has two string lengths, 650 mm and 704 mm. The lower courses run to a bass rider, the extended second pegbox that gives the thirteen-course German lute its long bass register while keeping the fingerboard within reach. The spruce soundboard carries a single rosette carved in interlaced knotwork, and the strings are tied to a bridge with the pointed ends of the German baroque tradition.
The bowl is built from twenty-seven ribs of flamed maple under a high-gloss finish, and the neck and fingerboard are ebony, with eight tied frets and turned ebony pegs. The maker’s label is visible through the rosette. A hard case is included in the sale.
