BFC (boyau filé cuivre) is gut wound with copper. Savarez designs its wound gut mainly for bowed instruments, as the natural complement to plain gut, and describes the copper winding as giving a traditional, rich and clear tone. The number is the PUL (weight per unit length), not the diameter. 1.20 m long.
The Savarez BFC wound gut strings (copper wound gut strings) are more especially intended for bowed instruments but also used on lutes, vihuelas.
They are the natural complement to and match perfectly with plain gut strings to give a perfect balance and sound homogeneity.
Like the plain gut strings they offer indisputable sound qualities and perfect intonation.
As the winding techniques have been improved, the string life has also been increased.
These Savarez BFC wound gut strings are wounded with copper (Savarez BFA wound gut strings are also available, gut strings wounded with silver plated copper).
Copper was one of the first metals used in wounded strings and it gives a traditional sound with a clear enriched tone.

- Rather than to mention the diameter, it is specified the linear density (PUL) of each string in order to determine the choice of the string according to the desired tension.
- Depending on their composition two strings can have a similar linear density (PUL) but not necessarily the same diameter, but they will sound with the same tension; and the other way around two strings that have the same diameter can have a different linear density (PUL) and will not sound with the same tension.
