As in other anniversaries, this year we wanted to bring a painting to life. We chose the Allegory of Music painted by Laurent de La Hyre in 1649, part of a series of the seven liberal arts that belonged to Gédéon Tallemant, a counsellor of Louis XIII, and was apparently painted for his house in Paris.
Music appears as a young woman tuning a theorbo: one hand turns a peg high up on the very long neck while the other plucks the strings to check the tuning, a scene any theorbo player will recognise. Beside her, on the table, are other instruments of the time and scores: a lute, a violin, two recorders, a vocal exercise and a song in two parts. And at her shoulder sits a small songbird, a symbol of natural music, in contrast with the learned music she stands for.
In the animation she finishes tuning while a breeze moves her mantle and the leaves of the tree at the window.
