Master classes for plucked string players from the 16th century

Taught by: Jacob Heringman & Ariel Abramovich, two of the leading Renaissance music specialists for lute and vihuelas. Classes will take place on November 26 and 27, 2016, in Madrid (site to be confirmed)

Aquila New NylgutOne of the main purposes in the research made by Aquila Corde has been designing a new synthetic product, which will meet all the acoustic qualities of gut but without the associated flaws (high cost, short life and instability to the environmental changes). New Nylgut precisely meets all the qualities of the gut without its flaws. Its main features include the speed of attack, excellent performance and remarkable stability in the tuning under environmental changes. Not only the colour is quite similar to the gut but also the new nylgut is more resistant and stable (break index similar to PVF, 305 HZ/mt). WOUND STRINGS
Wound Aquila DFirst quality wound strings made by Aquila Corde, with vernished copper wire. The innovative idea was to employ a Nylgut® multifilament core (very stable to the moisture changing) and to partly limit the production of the very high overtones giving the metallic edge that is generally present in the strings of this type and never welcome by early music lovers. The thinner strings, the ones more subject to wear-and-tear, are protected by a light superficial vernish which also grants a longer playing life. Diameters are expressed in equivalent solid gut (i.e. a Aquila D 73 is equivalent to 0.73 mm gut string). Aquila Loaded Basses CD“…there is another sort of strings, which they call Pistoy basses, which I conceive are none other than thick Venice-Catlins, which are commonly dyed, with a deep dark red colour.” (Thomas Mace “Musick’s Monument” London 1676) The appearing of wound strings caused, starting from the end of the 17th century, the definitive abandoning of the ancient manufacturing techniques of the traditional all-gut bass strings. This explains why modern plain gut strings fail to produce an acceptable acoustical performance in the low registers, thus making it unavoidable to use wound strings for musical repertoires that actually pre-date their historical appearing; this, in turn, causes an obvious philological paradox as well as serious tone and balance problems between high and low registers, especially on Lutes. Some considerations suggests the idea that gut bass strings were made densier: the loading of gut, a technological strategy that we believe employed by the old stringmakers in order to have the Lute bass strings much more performant. The CD bass strings are smooth synthetic loaded strings characterized by a high, standardized specific weight, achieved by a loading extruding process with very thin metallic copper powder made in the range of 115 CD till 220 CD.…

GUT STRINGS
Aquila Whole Unsplit - GutWhole unsplit lamb gut: only a myth from the past, or are they really different? The use of whole guts was the rule in some countries (such as Spain, Portugal and Italy) where there was availability of small animals that allowed the use of three, sometimes four of their coupled and twisted guts, to obtain the range of diameters suitable as the first string of a Violin. From the documents that were found, it would seem that new techniques were introduced in Germany only in the late XVIII century to overcome the problem that because of their type of sheep, it was impossible to obtain whole guts. The solution consists in splitting the intestine lengthwise and halfway in order to obtain thinner strips. While its use was actually known as early as the second half of the XVI century, at least: in the statutes of the string makers of Rome in 1587, 1591, 1642 and 1678 it was in fact forbidden to make strings from casings ‘split in the middle’, under penalty of heavy fines or even whip and jail and the expulsion from the roman stringmaker’s corporation. They are the result of intensive research on molecules, their connections and the crystallinity index, aiming to replicate own characteristics of the gut in a synthetic material, such as elongation and elasticity. Their production is based on the principals of traditional procedures combined with modern manufacture. Gut strings which have the maximum possible twist are called Florentiner or High Twist Gut. The special properties of this type of string are its higher levels of flexiblity and elasticity compared to that of plain gut. These properties make it a choice for mid range string. Because of the lower tensile strength it is not suitable for use as treble string. SYNTHETIC FRETS
Synthetic frets - Aquila Corde LSGut frets have been, perhaps, one of the last elements that has most resisted the use of synthetic components. Unlike strings, the use of gut frets is practically massive and, although there are synthetic options, they have never been a consolidated option in the lute family or the viola da gamba. Aquila LS synthetic frets can change this habit, as they are cheaper than gut frets and their life is far superior, since they do not wear down in the form of “hairs” or get flattened by pressure. In addition, they do not absorb sweat or moisture, so they are more stable. AQUILA CORDE

Terz GuitarIn the early 19th century, the terz guitar was so popular that the majority of guitar duets were played with the terz as primary voice and the guitar as second voice. The name of this instrument is related to the difference with the standard guitar tuning (terz meaning a third upper) Many original editions of duets from Vienna in this time period also refer to this instrument by using the notation “tierce”. Mauro Giuliani and Caspar Joseph Mertz wrote extensively for the terz guitar as a complement to the main standard guitar. HISTORICAL AND ROMANTIC

AQUILA CORDE

Aquila AmbraUntil the first half of the twentieth century, the only available guitar strings were made of gut for treble and gimped with silk for bass. Its acoustic spectrum was very different from the currently used synthetic strings, and its main features were: a remarkable tonal presence with the response and the typical brightness of the gut, while the bass had an exquisite vocal quality. These were less bright that current gimped nylon strings. The Aquila Corde´s Ambra strings have been developed with this historical fact as a fundamental basis, in order to faithfully reproduce the sound of that time with synthetic materials. As Pujol stated in his “Escuela Razonada de la Guitarra” (1934), we tried to find the right balance between the gimped and the core to accurately recreate the typical sound of the gimped silk strings of the time. Aquila Gut&SilkUntil the mid-twentieth century, the guitar strings were manufactured exclusively with guts for treble and gimped with silk for bass, where the acoustic result of this provision was very different to that obtained with currently used synthetic configurations. The Aquila Corde´s Gut & Silk strings have been developed with this historical fact as a fundamental basis, in order to faithfully reproduce the sound of that time with materials of the time. Aquila SugarDesigned with a trasparent look that resembles crystal glass, the Sugar Guitar Trebles are made using a recently discovered Italian blend of a plastic material derived from sugar-cane. The sound of these strings is clearly brilliant, clean and prompt, and provide great acoustic power. Unlike Fluorocarbon strings, these strings have an excellent vibrato and a remarkable timbre variation when played very close to the bridge and then up over the sound hole. Aquila Ambra 2000The Ambra 2000 set was born from the wish to search for sounds similar to gut strings, now lost, which first made the guitar great. The set is composed of Nylgut® for the trebles (with a small different formulation in order to get the maximum reachable sing-ability that is the main target of this set) and silver-plated copper wound on a multifilament Nylgut® core for the basses, looking for a balance between metal and core which would recreate a warm and percussive sound similar to silk basses. Aquila SetaThis natural silk core basses can eventually be paired with the normal tension Ambra 2000 trebles (150C), recreating in this way the old “Seta” set. These basses of this set are in real silk floss, which, being naturally produced by an insect, cannot be steadily regular in their gauge. As a consequence, it may happen that the bass strings at 12th fret may be flat or sharp to a certain extent. The limit accepted by us is of 8 cents more or less. Beyond this value, the string is considered non-compliant and it will be replaced. Besides, we would like to remind that the degree of compensation introduced by the inclination of the bone of the bridge – which is calibrated to the modern strings with a core of Nylon- may not apply to strings with a core of natural silk. Use this basses set at the standard pitch of 435 Hz and on guitar of max 65 cms of scale.
