About this calculator
- Certain instruments might require adjustments on the bridge, nut or both to fit certain gauges.
- Check out the equivalences in case you are looking for other brands or string types.
- Check out the diameters to know more about the actual diameters for certain string types.
1. Select Instrument & Base Setup
Choose your instrument from the main dropdown in the "Setup" section. Then, set the desired a' pitch (Hz) and adjust the default string lengths (cm) for each string group (e.g., Fingerboard, Extension).
2. Global Adjustments
Use the controls in the "Settings" section to make broad changes:
- Transpose Tuning: Shift every note (including your edits and added courses) up or down by semitones.
- Adjust Tension: Add or remove kilos to every string at once, keeping your individual edits.
3. Fine-Tune Individual Strings
In the results table, modify each string as needed:
- Change the Note using the text input or the + / - buttons.
- Adjust the specific Tension (Kg) using its number input field.
- Change the Length (cm) of a single course when it differs from its group. A highlighted length is custom: Reset brings back the group length.
4. View Results & Materials
The table automatically calculates string diameters. Toggle checkboxes in the "Settings" section to show/hide columns for different materials (Nylon, Carbon, etc.). Check the Total Tension displayed above the table.
Advanced: Manage Courses
Modify the instrument's string layout:
- Click Add a new course below the table to add a course after the last one (same string length, a tone lower).
- Click Remove on a row to remove a course, or only its paired string on the pair row. Use + unison / + octave to add a paired string.
- Use Move up / Move down to reorder courses. Each position keeps its string length.
5. Export Data
Use Copy to clipboard in the Results section (or Preview) to get your string set as a table you can paste into a spreadsheet or an e-mail.
