Classical guitar - Aquila Alabastro

Until mid-20th century, the three treble strings of the guitar were almost exclusively made with gut, a material that had been used for a thousand years and that combines good promptness of attack and excellent acoustic performances, substantially different, therefore, from that of normal Nylon.

The timbre of gut has always been a constant point of reference for violin makers, composers and performers until the recent past.

One of the main purposes in the research made by Aquila Corde has been designing a new synthetic product, which will meet all the acoustic qualities of gut but without the associated flaws (high cost, short life and instability to the environmental changes).

The Alabastro trebles are made of a monofilament of ‘synthetic gut’, called Nylgut, perfectly round and smooth, that allows readiness to attack, acoustic projection, and timbric qualities that remind those of gut.

Nylgut precisely meets all the qualities of the gut without its flaws, alowing the rediscovery of the sounds that were familiar to the great masters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its main features include the speed of attack, excellent performance and remarkable stability in the tuning under environmental changes, higher than the best Nylon strings.

These properties, therefore, allow an optimal ‘sound connection’ with the wound bass strings, that are made up of a multifilament core of Nylgut and a silver-plated copper winding These basses are characterized by high tensile strength and great stability to climate change, allowing a fast and stable intonation, excellent acoustic performance and a long life of the strings.

technical details

  • STRING: Synthetic and wounded strings
  • MATERIALS:
    • Trebles: Nylgut
    • Basses: Silver-plated copper over multifilament core of Nylgut
  • TENSIONS:
    • Available in three different tension degrees (Light, Normal, Superior)
  • DESIGNED FOR: Suitable for classical guitar
  • CONSIDERATIONS:
    • Like gut, Nylgut is a cut-sensitive material. Before installing the strings, make sure that the grooves on the nut and the bridge are shallow, perfectly smooth and without sharp corners. If this is not the case, use 600-grit emery cloth or fine-grained steel wool.
